I would like to express my strong interest in applying for the PhD in Mathematics at University of York. The purpose of this personal statement will describe my background, personal motivation, future academic interest, as well as future plans as the justification for the admission to the program.
As an alumna of University of York, I have a deeper understanding of In limine sapientiae. After the completion of the master program in Financial Engineering, I felt there was an urgent need for me to continue my endeavor will excellent faculty and fellow students at the mathematics department of University of York. My research interest rooted during my undergraduate student in China where I acquired foundation knowledge in mathematics, programing, statistics, and economics. China’s economic development was rocketing for decades. Chinese citizens, including myself, enjoy the benefit from the economic, social, and human development behind the growth. The development capital market is one of the critical factors which leads to such development. Thus, I was extremely fascinated with the prediction and control models of the Chinese fiscal revenue.
I entered the University of York financial engineering program with such interest. Indeed, it was a fun ride. I further advanced my knowledge in Financial Risk Management, programing skills, and exotic related research. It is not only the beautiful campus, the advanced lab, but also the knowledgeable professors, and friendly classmates that helps me make my final decision to come back and continue my journey here at University of York. I would like to further explore, study, and research in the area of Mathematic Finance, and the PhD program will definitely offer such opportunity. Particularly, I am interested in the distribution and mechanism of spread options in the energy market. A detailed research proposal is also provided along with my application.
My long term academic interest, goal, and career path lies within the unique Mathematical Finance Group in the math department. I will apply the theoretical lenses to understand the arbitrage and option pricing in markets with friction and incomplete markets. I was stunned with Professor Tomasz Zastawniak’s research during the time I worked with him as master student. I would like to continue my research and study under the guidance of Professor Zastawniak in the area of mathematical finance and stochastic analysis. I am also excited about the most valuable asset of the university, the faculty and stuff. Institute for Medicine and Engineering (IME) which stimulate and bridge the research gaps between biomedical research and clinical practice will be a perfect fit for my future career as a faculty member in university or research institute. Beside my research and study interest, I am interested in applying my skills to the working scenario. I am a CFA level II candidate. I also loving communicating with people around me. As a self-motivated student, my positive attitude will help my future PhD program at University of York.
In sum, I position myself as an alumna, future student, collaborator, and contributor in the Department of Mathematics, University of York as it fits my future career plan. Both my intellectual interests and academic interests will be explored as the program offers lot of opportunities beyond the textbooks. I believe that I can contribute to the program through study, research, and collaboration with other students and faculties.
