Depression is a mental illness that affects large segments of the population worldwide. There have been many efforts to treat depressive symptoms in diagnosed patients, but there is still some debate as to which method works best for each case. While some psychologists or physicians find that medication works best for patients, others favor therapy, be it individual or group based to address the needs of the client. This experiment seeks to determine which treatment plan has been the most successful through self-reported symptom analysis over determined periods of time.
In this study subjects will be measured over a course of treatment and asked to quantify their symptoms of depression on a scale of 0-10with 0 being “No feelings of depression” and 10 being “Constant and overwhelming feelings of depression." This data will be gathered from patients seeking 4 types of treatment: individual therapy, group therapy, medication without therapy, and no treatment. Ten subjects will be randomly assigned for each treatment. This random assignment will prevent any inconsistencies with treatment or the patient’s expectations. The “No Treatment” option will serve as a placebo for the experiment.
This experiment asks the question: to what extent do patients with clinically diagnosed depression report improvements over set periods of time after receiving various types of treatment?
The study will be conducted blindly, with patients receiving a prescribed treatment at random. They will then be measured over periods of time—one month, six months, and a year—and asked to self-report their levels of depressive symptoms. These symptoms will be measured quantitatively on a scale of 0-10, with 0 being “No feelings of depression” and 10 being “Constant and overwhelming feelings of depression." The quantitative results of the study will then be measured and compared against one another to determine the improvement in symptoms over the given course of treatment.
The dependent variable in this study is reported feelings of depression and its symptoms. The study will work on a two-factor analysis with factor A being time and factor B being treatment method. Factor A will be broken down into: A1 = one month, A2 = six months, and A3 = one year of treatment. Factor B will be broken down as: B1 = individual therapy, B2 = group therapy, B3 = medication but no therapy, and B4 = No treatment. These factors will be measured against one another and analyzed based on their mean responses and the deviation between various treatments.
The purpose of this research will be to help psychologists determine a proper treatment for their patients. With so many treatment options available, it can be difficult for a provider to decide which is the best for his or her client. While the benefit of treatments is also affected by personal factors within a patient’s life, the results gathered from this study can help mental health providers see which treatments garner the best results overall.
In conclusion, there are some forms of treatment that clearly work better on patients with depression than others. Individual therapy seems to be the most affective treatment as seen by the self-reported improvements in patients studied. Similarly, those who receive no treatment are the most likely to have continued and persistent symptoms. All in all, it is recommended that psychologists consult their clients and the data before prescribing a set treatment method. Treatments like individual and group therapy have been found to work better than medication alone, but a combination of the above may be found to be the most effective in a particular case.
