On 12 Feb. 1924, a concert named the “Experiment in Modern Music” was held in the hall in the New York City. George Gershwin’s piece for jazz band leader Paul Whitman was arranged in the twenty-third in the list of songs. In the end of the concert, differing from other songs, the strong flavor of the jazz of this piece suddenly shocked audiences’ minds, stimulated their sensitive nerves, woke up their subconsciousness, and won the thunderous applause, which not only demonstrated people’s strong affirmation towards black music, but also brought him recognition as a great talented composer in the American history of music. This piece was the world-famous “Rhapsody in Blue” .
George Gershwin (1898-1937), as the composer of this piece is one of the outstanding representatives and the musical geniuses of the 20th century, who has always been enjoying his high reputation in his pure pursuit of the musical creation deeply rooted into the soil of the folk and urban music with strong jazz elements. In his short life, George Gershwin has written numerous mass popular pop songs for the musicals and movies and even dipped into the creations of the serious but classic orchestral works, whose serious critical ways of thinking and unique creation techniques that were widely used in the musical creations have already become the precious assents for the later generations. From the creations of the jazz symphony-- “Rhapsody in Blue” to the symphonic poem “An American in Paris”, from “Piano Concerto in F” to the “Cuban Overture” and the opera “Borgei and Bess”, all of his works are intrigued with the great amount of elements of the blacks’ folk music and jazz elements showing their different ways of existence, among which the success of “Rhapsody in Blue” as a perfect combination between the pop music and classical music, opens the windows for the realization of the new musical forms, in which George Gershwin used a peculiar language--Jazz to gradually lift the veils of the American folk music and make it become acceptable among the public. Since then, the “Rhapsody in Blue” has not only changed George Gershwin’s fate and listed him into the serious musicians, but also has shifted the fate of jazz music.
All in all, when people mentioned the jazz music, it is a natural thing for them to think of the great and talented musician in American music history--George Gershwin, who is the first Jewish composer to bring the jazz music into the classic music. Before jazz music met George Gershwin, it just existed in some vulgar places, like black people, who have been discriminated by the white-people dominant society. It is George Gershwin who saved the American music, opened a new door for jazz music and made it presentable and acceptable for the public.
